a website for the conservative librarian

This posting over at LISNews concerns a project by ALA to create guidelines for
developing graphic novel collections. Part of that is a section on dealing with challenged books which offers
this little gem:
The conviction that young persons are entitled to enjoy the same freedom to
read as adults is not a belief that children should be given adult-themed
materials. We believe in freedom of choice for all people but we also believe in
common sense, and common sense will tell you that it is extremely unusual for a
young child to check out adult material.
I guess it all depends on how you want to define 'adult-themed materials' but
at least there is some acknowledgement that, no, kids shouldn't have access to everything.
Okay, nuff of that. Life goes on, not for the librarians in prison, or it does, just
barely, but still... why should we care? . However if you'd like an anatomy class on
hypocrites, Case #1 is here. Look
for emails concerning a petition to "condemn Israel's aggression against Lebanon".
